Cubs v. Reds 9-23-2003

We got to Great American Ballpark early enough for Steph to grab a batting practice ball that went into the stands (it almost took her head off). We were there on the last week of the 2003 season to watch the Cubs beat up the Reds and vie for first place. The crowd was about 40% Chicago fans.

Great American Ballpark (GABP) is somewhat similar to PNC Park in Pittsburgh, only without all the fun. Both parks are leveled by a river in right field, but PNC backs it up with a fantastic view of the Pittsburgh skyline and bridges. GABP showcases barren Kentucky. PNC is surrounded by some honestly cool bars and pubs- there's nothing to do near GABP other than cab it to Covington. It's a decent park, but I guess I was expecting something more.

We did get some awesome seats though right behind the Reds' dugout. Steph and I have seen a couple games over the last few years and I've got to say- the closer to the action, the better. That should be fairly obvious but many times we've skimped on seat location to try and save a few bucks. If it's a meaningful game, and you love your team, the extra money is nothing compared to the rush of seeing the action without having to squint (this of course only holds true if your team doesn't lose, in that case it sucks no matter where you're sitting).
